Man nabbed for swindling friends money amounting to over K20,000

Police in Mutendere has arrested and charged Bright Phiri 55, of Petauke District in Eastern Province for five counts of Obtaining Money by False Pretense amounting to K20, 560=00 and one count of Impersonation.

The incidents occurred between November 7, 2023 and December 23, 2023 in Mutendere Township of Lusaka.

Brief facts of the matter are that Simon Phiri of house number A271 Mutendere Township reported on behalf of five other family friends who were swindled of their money amounting to K20, 560=00 by Bright Phiri, his Childhood friend of Petauke District in Eastern Province.

The suspect is an Ex-convict had visited the reporter’s home in Mutendere Township and were he duped the victims  by claiming that he had connections with New Dawn Government and that he was working with a named Cabinet Minister when in fact not.

He further claimed that he was going to facilitate the opening of a company of buying motor vehicles and buy a house in Meanwood area due to the connections he has.

The suspect later told the victim to deposit money in an Airtel mobile account which he claimed belonged to the Minister when in fact not.

This is contained in a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.

Mr Hamoonga said the suspect is currently detained in Police Custody and will appear in Court soon.
