Man killed by croc

A-40-year-old man of Chirundu has been attacked and killed by a by crocodile while he was fishing in the Zambezi river

Richard Mwape the victim whilst fishing, was attacked after the crocodile hit into the dugout canoe he was in with his uncle which later capsized.

In the process he was caught by a crocodile while his uncle managed to swim to safety.

Assistant Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said that Police in Chirundu recorded an incident of crocodile attack in which one person aged 40 died.

Mr Chilabi said Jackson Mwewa 39 of Chibaketi Township in Chirundu reported that his nephew of the same village had been attacked and killed.

He said this occurred on December 1, 2022 around 04:00hours in Jordan Kapululira fishing area in the Zambezi River.

“A team constituting of officers from the Zambia Police Service and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks conducted a search exercise.

“Later in the afternoon around 17:00hrs, some human body parts were found and identified by relatives as that of the deceased person.  Around the same vicinity, a crocodile was spotted with the deceased’s leg in its mouth,” he said.

Mr Chilabi said the reptile was killed but the main body is still missing while the recovered parts have been deposited in Mtendere Mission Hospital in Chirundu as the search continues.

In a related incident, one person died in a fatal Road Traffic Accident that occurred along the Great East opposite Chalimbana University in Chongwe District around 13:30 hours yesterday 1st December 2022.

Involved was Jimmy Nkhoma 47, of Chilenje South   Plot Number 2331 Lusaka who was driving a Motor Vehicle Subaru registration number AOB 2860

Also involved was a Cyclist Poniso Kandela aged 34 of Chalimbana area of Chongwe District.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when the said cyclist was crossing the road whilst cycling and in the process was hit by an oncoming motor vehicle.

The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chongwe District Hospital.

 

The deceased body has since been deposited in Chongwe District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
