Man jailed 2 years for theft of Mulonga Water property

A 25-year-old man of Chingola has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing and vandalizing Mulonga Water supply and Sanitation Company (MWSC) properties.

 Appearing before Magistrate Steven Mabona was Sunday Mulwanda of Mushishima Township who was charged for vandalism and thefts of MWSC properties worth K2000 from a newly constructed Ventilation Improved Pit Latrines.

Facts of the matter were that, on June 15, 2022, Mulwanda did vandalize and steal metal rail guards valued at K2, 000 from a newly constructed Ventilation Improved Pit Latrines. He was arrested by Zambia Police and MWSC security after a tip off from the public.

This is the second court conviction in slightly over a month for illegal activities concerning MWSC properties after another man was jailed for six months with hard labour for collecting money from unsuspecting members of the public on the pretext that they company employees.

MWSC Communications Manager Bright Mtonga expressed regret at the increasing number of illegal activities and cautioned members of the public to desist from the vices.

Mr Mtonga said that the company had increased security and inspection and that anyone found wanting will be prosecuted in accordance with the Water Supply and Sanitation Act.

“It is regrettable that we continue to have increased number of thefts and vandalism cases. The latest case is particularly serious as it involves newly constructed facilities.

Members of the community are encouraged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities so that public property is protected,” he said.
