Lusaka City Council (LCC) has warned that it will start killing stray dogs if owners fail to secure them.
This warning comes after the local authority received numerous complaints about the increase in the number of stray dogs in various communities.
LCC Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said stray dogs are more rampant around learning institutions and around boarding houses thereby threatening the safety of learners.
Mr Sichimba said dogs are attracted to learning institutions and boarding houses by the food discarded by learners.
“Reports indicate that some stray dogs are charging towards learners when they are disturbed during their mission of scavenging for food.
The local authority has therefore, devised a programme covering all constituencies to eliminate stray dogs,” he said.
He said all dogs that will be found roaming the streets or found in wrong places shall be eliminated.
“According to the Control of Dogs Act Cap 247 of the Laws of Zambia, all dogs must be secured by owners during the day and released at night but they should still be confined within the owner’s premises,” he said.
The local authority is therefore, appealing to dog owners in the city to acquaint themselves with the provisions of the law and keep their dogs accordingly.
