Lusaka drunk driver jailed

THE Lusaka Fast Track Court on Traffic Offences has sentenced a Lusaka motorist to six months for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Magistrate Austin Mubita sentenced Kapeya Chewe to six months imprisonment in default of the offences committed.

Particulars of the offence are that, on April 21st 2018, Mr. Chewe was driving a motor vehicle along Chilumbulu Road in Lusaka, where he was intercepted for driving in a dangerous manner and was also tested for driving under the influence of alcohol contrary to Section 157 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002.

It was established that Mr. Chewe had consumed 1.01/1mg of alcohol which was above the permissible limit of 0.38mg/l.

Mr. Chewe was also charged with the offences of driving a motor vehicle with expired Road Tax, driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to obey lawful instructions contrary to the Road Traffic Act No.11 of 2002.

And the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) is elated with the Magistrate Courts judgement as it would serve as a deterrent measure to would be traffic offenders.

The Agency hopes that the conviction of Mr. Kapeya Chewe will act as a deterrent measure to would-be road traffic offenders and send a strong self-control signal to all drivers not to flout road traffic regulations with impunity.
