Lumumba Bus Station Chazanga Route Drivers Secure Land for Future

By Staff Writer
Lumumba Bus Station Chazanga route drivers have collectively purchased a 12-hectare parcel of land in the Muchenje area of Chief Mungule, Chibombo District, Central Province. This landmark acquisition will benefit 220 bus drivers, each receiving a 30 by 30 plot.

According to Route Chairperson Pethias Nenguke, the drivers raised K450,000 to purchase the land, demonstrating their commitment to securing their future. Nenguke credited the government’s progress in eliminating cadarism, allowing drivers to work freely without fear or intimidation.

The drivers’ financial discipline and dedication to the project were evident in their contributions, with each driver contributing K40 for each trip. This collective effort enabled them to raise the required funds within 12 months.

The route intends to establish a planned layout, featuring a 12-meter-wide two-way road, to enhance service delivery and quality of life. Vice Chairperson Evans Chibota emphasized the importance of refraining from selling the land, ensuring its long-term benefits for the drivers.

“Our drivers don’t even have pensions, so it’s only right that they have these kinds of initiatives to protect themselves from future losses after retirement,” Chibota said.

Beneficiaries acknowledged that raising and saving the required funds was a challenging task, but the peaceful environment fostered by the government made it achievable.

This initiative not only secures the drivers’ future but also demonstrates their ability to work together towards a common goal, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.
