Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has directed Lubambe copper Mine in Chililabombwe to put their house in order and avoid retrenching workers.
Mr Kabuswe said that the mine has one of the Richest copper ore bodies in the world, that is why they cannot continue running the mine as kiosk.
Speaking when he addressed over 200 former Lubambe Copper Mine workers who were retrenched on voluntary separation in Chililabombwe at Kamenza secondary school hall, Mr Kabuswe said it is unacceptable to have such scenarios when copper prices are on pick.
Mr Kabuswe who is also Chililabobwe Member of Parliament said it is time for the mine to pull up their socks and increase the copper production which cannot be done by retrenching workers.
“The people of Chililabombwe voted for the UPND Government so that jobs and wealthy created can be created. Government will soon engage management at Lubambe copper Mine to see how best they can handle issues affecting them,” he said.
Mr Kabuswe said government is tirelessly working to ensure that no miner loses their jobs but it is unfortunate that 200 miners lost employment.
He emphasized that he is not promising the retrenched miners anything but encouraged them to write a petition as he tables the matter with cabinet ministers and President Hichilema.
“I want to appeal to Chililabombwe Mayor Lucky Sichone to ensure that the former miners are given plots as promised by Lubambe copper Mine,” he said.
And a representative of the retrenched workers Eunice Mavuya told the MP and the mayor to expedite the issuance of plots promised by Lubambe copper mine.
She also called Mr Kabuswe to compel the Mine to give the former Miners about 30 thousand kwacha cash as retirement.
