Luangwa Bridge in Kitwe re-opened

By Staff Writer
The Luangwa South Bound Bridge across the Kafue river on the Kitwe – Ndola dual carriageway in Kitwe on the Copperbelt has been re-opened.

Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister Vincent Mwale announced that the bridge re-opened on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 06:00hours.

The bridge was temporarily closed on Monday, March 16, 2020, due to the high-water levels arising from the above normal rainfall experienced in some parts of the country such as Copperbelt, Luapula and Northern Provinces during the 2019/2020 rainy season.

The above normal rainfall resulted in flash floods which consequently damaged some infrastructure.

Mr Mwale said following the end of the rainy season, the Road Development Agency (RDA) assessed the Luangwa South Bound Bridge and established that the Bridge was in a fairly good condition and could be used by members of the public in the interim.

The Minister said the long-term solution would be to undertake major rehabilitation of the bridge.

The re-opening of the bridge is primarily to decongest the North Bound Bridge.
