Let’s help them: they are deaf but not beggars

By JOHN SAKALA
The trio on the picture are deaf and dumb yet they never go round streets asking for handouts from well-wishers, they instead own a car wash in Luanshya.

After their story was published on The Independent Observer website, social media buzz to help the boys, the SOS was louder and appealing.

The Independent Observer Staffer Kunda Londa randomly took his car for cleaning and he was caught by the dumb side of it.

He seized the opportunity to highlight the effort and immediately cars started trooping to the car wash.

Emerald and Semi-precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) President Victor Kalesha was the first client to respond to the SOS.

“But these young men despite being deaf, they have used initiative to earn a living by working for their livelihood.  If you live in Luanshya once a while wash your car from here to empower them. I brought my executive car for washing for a noble cause. The author for the article for these deaf boys running a car wash thanks for the human interest story,” he said.

“The Independent Observer posted about them and I went to have my car washed and I was impressed unlike the lazy boys who go at lay byes harassing people while asking for handouts of coins.  In my view these are the people who are supposed to be beneficiaries of the Presidential Empowerment Fund.  The boys just use hands to do the work.  Can we empower these deaf boys?  If I had a way, I was going to buy them equipment and improve their work place,” he said.

Mr Kalesha said the young men need support from well-meaning people unlike parading themselves in the streets taking advantage of their situation.

These three energetic young men are deaf but have refused to resort to begging and they have jointly started a car cleaning business in Luanshya Watchdog Reloaded opposite Buteko basic school.

And Democratic Party President Gift Kalumba promised to have his car washed once he is in Luanshya whether the car will be dirt or clean.
