Kitwe squatters accommodated by Phoenix material

The Kitwe City Council, (KCC) has announced that the land dispute involving Phoenix materials and the squatters on the Kitwe -Chingola road have been resolved.

Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kango’mbe disclosed in a statement that the decision was arrived at during a meeting held at council which was attended by Copperbelt Minister Japhen Mwakalombe, Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu Area Mindolo Councillor and Deputy Mayor Evaristo Chilufya, the owner of the land, the squatters’ representatives, council officers and officials from CEEC.

Mr Kango’mbe said that it was resolved that frontage of land will be used by the owners, Phoenix Materials for mixed use development and squatters will vacate the front portion.

He said that it was agreed in the meeting that Phoenix Materials will donate part of the land behind the frontage to Kitwe City Council adding that the extent will be determined today by the experts.

“The surrendered land will be sub-divided by Kitwe City Council into smaller plots and offer letters be given to the squatters at an affordable fee. Other resolutions made were that a head count be done starting Thursday August 30 of the number of squatters occupying the entire land both in front and behind the said land,” he said.

He said that Phoenix Materials will fence off the remaining land that is on the frontage to avoid further encroachment and that a standard building house drawing will be provided by the local authority to the squatters.

The Mayor said that minister of National Planning Alexander Chiteme approved the resolutions.
