Kitwe City Council Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga says Kitwe is in critical need of an engineered landfill.
Eng Luanga said the closure of the Uchi dumpsite at the end of next month will create a serious need for a disposal site before the local authority resorts to exporting waste.
He was speaking when he toured the Interwaste recycling and landfill facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday.
Eng Luanga said there is need to change the way waste is managed if the country is to have a pollution free environment as well as combat climate change.
He said the vision of Kitwe becoming the cleanest municipality in the Country needs change of approach in the manner waste is managed so that an enabling environment is created for the future generation.
Eng Luanga called on all stakeholders, business houses to rally behind the Local Authority to ensure that sensitisation on the management of waste is managed at household level for easy organisation.
Speaking during the tour Interwaste Mining Division head Linda Mcdonald said waste management has the potential of transforming any country’s economic and social status as it is a conduit to youth employment.
Mrs Mcdonald said waste has the capacity to create youth entrepreneurship as long as society begins to attach value in the waste.
She said it is imperative to note that everyone has a right to safe and healthy environment and therefore, proper disposal of waste remains a critical component for the safe, clean water and environment.
