Minister in the Office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri has cautioned residents of Gudula and Ibex villages in Katete District against selling of building materials given by Government under the build back better project.
Speaking when she delivered 500 roofing sheets to more than 40 households whose houses collapsed due to heavy rains, Ms Phiri said government is spending a lot of money to procure the items therefore selling them will be irresponsible.
Ms Phiri said the build back better programme will not yield good results if the parties involved are not taking responsibility.
She said government does not want to be addressing same challenges every year.
The minister who is also Nyimba Member of Parliament told the residents to be using the right material when building houses to avoid distructions.
Ms Phiri also urged the affected residents to consider planting trees to act as wind breakers in the wake of climate change.
And speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries Fatness Zulu thanked government for the prompt response.
She said the quick response indicates how committed government is towards the wellbeing of it’s people.
Acting Katete District Commissioner (DC) Anslow Musoka said the timely response by government has served a lot of property damage for many families.
Ms Musoka said her office is working with the office of the Regional Coordinator in identifying other houses that are at risk of collapsing for quick intervention.
