K5.7 million released for former civil servants

Government has released over K5.7 million to clear the outstanding amount owed to former civil servants.

The amount is for Civil servants who left the service through the voluntary separation program between 1998 and 2001.

Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary Andrew Nkunika said the release of the funds will bring to a closure the long-standing issue.

Mr Nkunika said the over 5.7 million Kwacha is in addition to the over 14 million Kwacha which was provided by government in 2020 to the former civil servants

He said government is determined to uplift the welfare of the former civil servants, hence the decision to release the outstanding amount.

Mr Nkunika said the affected former workers are those who went as voluntary separates under the public service reform program which was supported by the World Bank between 1998 and 2001.

He said the program was meant to reduce the large wage bill which was more than what government could attend to.
