By Staff Writer

Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba says cases of human trafficking are increasing at a fast rate.

Mr Kajoba said this calls for capacity building in officers both in Zambia and regionally, for them to effectively investigate and eradicate cases of human trafficking.

He also said Zambia is one of the transit points for such crimes and that there is need for officers to be on alert so that they can prevent and respond to cases.

Mr Kajoba was speaking during training for trainers on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants course in Lusaka.

And outgoing Chairperson Mosetsangape Mathe said one of the ways of combating human trafficking is by creating an environment that will deter police officers from getting bribes through such crimes.

Meanwhile, SADC Secretariat Senior Officer Police Thanyani Gumede called for countries in the SADC region to work together to address human trafficking.

And Harare’s Head Bureau Interpol Representative Alekunda Urio said the Southern African region has been used as a route to smuggle migrants.
