Harassment of Journalists saddens ZIIMA

By STAFF WRITTER
The Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance (ZIIMA) is saddened by the harassment of Journalists by security personnel at public events.

ZIIMA Vice Preident Jubeil Zulu said the harassment of journalists at events such as the Agricultural and Commercial Show is unacceptable as journalists are there to inform, educate and entertain the masses.

Ms Zulu said this in relation to the harassment that occurred at the Agriculture and Commercial Show when the Vice president Mrs Mutale Nalumango toured some stands as well as the ZESCO stand where security personnel stopped journalists from covering the event and harassed the journalists. “This is the reason ZIIMA has always insisted the need for corporate entities and government departments to always engage services of journalists and Public relations Practioners who understand the role of the media, “she said in a statement made available to The Independent Observer.

She urged journalists and media houses that face on the spot deliberate man made challenges to shun and blacklist such entities as they have the capacity to ruin the quality of information. “To this end we demand that ZESCO issues an apology to the media for the embarrassment caused. Merely taking ‘administrative measures’ onto the overzealous Zesco Security personnel cannot fully atone for that, “she said.
