Government Suspends Announcement on KCM and Mopani Copper Mines Pending Ongoing Negotiations

The Minister of Mines and Minerals, Mr. Paul Kabuswe, has said that the government has temporarily suspended the scheduled announcement regarding KCM (Konkola Copper Mines) and Mopani copper mines. The decision to suspend the announcement is based on the ongoing negotiations aimed at finding a solution that will be beneficial to all stakeholders involved.

Mr. Kabuswe reassured the government’s unwavering commitment to resolving the issues surrounding KCM and Mopani mines. He remains optimistic that a decision will be reached, which will not only satisfy the interests of the community but also address the concerns of the investors.

Although the Minister was initially scheduled to announce the decision today, he clarified that the negotiations have not yet concluded, leading to the need for a temporary delay. The government emphasizes the importance of adhering to the laws enshrined in the Mines and Minerals Act, ensuring responsible behavior and compliance by the mining companies.

Mr. Kabuswe stated that the delay in the announcement is essential to ensure that the best possible decision is made, taking into account all relevant factors and considerations. The government’s ultimate goal is to uphold the rule of law throughout the process.

As the negotiations progress, Mr. Kabuswe pledged to provide regular updates to the public until the final decision is reached. He also took the opportunity to assure the people on the Copperbelt and civil society that the government’s actions are undertaken with the best interests of all parties involved in mind.
