Govt should consider reducing fuel price-Motorists

By IREEN MULENGA
Some motorists in Mufulira District have called on the government to quickly consider reducing fuel prices.

Motorists have wondered why fuel prices have remained high despite the appreciation of the local currency.

Speaking in an interview, the motorists said that they expected fuel prices to reduce the moment the kwacha gained strength against major convertible currencies.

One of the motorists James Banda said that the fuel price is too much hence the need to reduce since the Dollar is coming down.

“we appeal to Government to look into this issue of fuel, the high fuel prices is making our job difficult to meet the target for cashing,” he said.

And Energy Expert Johnston Chikwanda has called for patience among motorists who are questioning whether fuel pump prices will remain unchanged or not in view of the appreciation of the kwacha the Dollar.

Mr Chikwanda said while the appreciation of the kwacha against the US dollar is positive, more factors need to be considered before any adjustment in fuel pump prices is made such as the price of crude oil on the international market.

He said motorists should also wait for policy pronouncements from government especially that it had waved some taxes on the commodity such as the excise and customs duties.

Mr Chikwanda is however confident that if the appreciation of the local currency continues, the benefits will trickle down to the consumers.
