Government has released 44 Million Kwacha to the National Road Fund Agency- NRFA to settle one month’s outstanding arrears owed to routine road maintenance contractors across the country.
NRFA Public Relations Manager Alphonsius Hamachila has confirmed the release of the funds by the Ministry of Finance.
Mr Hamachila said the payment is in progress and that the routine road maintenance contractors would at least be paid by Wednesday this week.
He said Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe has placed emphasis on the empowerment of small and medium scale contractors to build local contracting capacity and improve livelihoods at household level.
Mr Hamachila said there are about 4- hundred Small and Medium Scale contractors engaged under routine road maintenance contracts, with over 20 thousand employees across the country.
