By ALICE NACHILEMBE
The Zambian government and private sector are jointly constructing 520 communication towers across the country, aiming to achieve 96% phone and internet coverage by the end of 2025. Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati announced that the government is building 340 towers, while the private sector is constructing an additional 180 towers. Once completed, the total number of communication towers in the country will increase to 900.

Speaking at the commissioning of a communication tower in Kabanga Primary School, Itezhi-Tezhi District, Mr. Mutati explained that the goal is to enable Zambians to access online government services, such as the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP), Social Cash Transfer, and others. He emphasized the importance of easy access to markets and buyers for local farmers.

The Ministry of Technology and Science is working with Members of Parliament to identify areas in need of phone services. Itezhi-Tezhi MP Twaambo Mutinta appreciated the construction of the Kabanga Communication Tower, which will improve connectivity for the locals. He noted that the district has only 10 communication towers, with only two offering 4G network, and requested more towers to be built in areas without phone network coverage.

Chief Chilyabufu of the Ila people thanked the government for connecting his chiefdom to the phone network and requested road construction in his area, citing their deplorable state.
