Follow Labour laws, safety protocols- UMUZ

By IREEN MULENGA
Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ)  has advised mining companies to follow the Labour Laws and safety protocols that are set in the sector to avoid being shut down.

Speaking in an interview with The Independent Observer, MUZ President Joseph Chewe said that he was concerned with the suspension of operations in a number of mines.

“The Minister of mine has a mandate to check mine safety department for the compliance of safety in the industries in order to prevent further closer of mines,” he said.

He said it is also the responsibility of the mining industries to ensure that safety is followed in work places by all employees.

Mr Chewe has since implored mines in the country to operate under the prescribed safety measures, Labour Laws and have valid licenses to avoid the risk of being closed or suspended.

He said the continued closure of some mines has affected the living standards of many miners as they do not have enough income hence the need for owners of the companies to start following the law.
