President Edgar Lungu has tasked newly appointed Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu to fix the economy.
Speaking during the swearing in ceremony of Dr Ng’andu, President Lungu has challenged the Minister to settle Zambia’s mounting debt obligation.
He has encouraged Dr Ngandu to work with relevant stakeholders to achieve meaningful results.
Dr Ngandu has replaced Margaret Mwanakatwe as Finance Minister.
And in response to the media shortly after his swearing in, Dr. Ngándu acknowledged that his first task would be to restore the economy.
He observed that government has already identified many policies and pronouncements that merely needed to be implemented and adhered to in order to restore the economy.
And when queried on what the ministry position will be with regards to sales tax and the IMF Dr. Ngándu said;
“With Sales Tax the question we need to check is will it be prudent for a new regime to implement three quarters into the Fiscal year, remember we are talking September…. As for IMF we need to engage them constructively …. But as we do we need to restore fiscal health.”
