Five people die in a Chirundu road accident

Five people have died while 14 others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred today at around 05:00 hours along Chirundu road near Siamikobo primary school.

Among the deceased is a police officer identified as sergeant Aaron Daka aged 33 of Chirundu Police station, the other four have only been identified as Bright Banda, Musonda Mulenga, Dalana Robert and Oscar Muziyo.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said that  accident happened when Kelvin Daka who was driving a Daf truck registration number AJE 2360 from Lusaka to Chirundu improperly overtook another vehicle and in the process collided with a Toyota Hiace mini bus registration number AEB 2691 which was coming from the opposite direction.

“The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Kafue General Hospital while bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Kafue General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said

in another accident, three people sustained burn injuries when the fuel tankers exploded in a garage situated along Mukwa road in Lusaka.

Mr Mwale said that the  three males who are yet to be identified were rushed to the University Teaching Hospitals where they are receiving treatment.

“Brief facts of the incident are that today, around 11:00 hours a tanker registration number DZ74CC GP caught fire when the generator they were using to transfer fuel from one tanker to the other developed a fault and ignited, other two tankers, bearing registration numbers AOB 3888 and DZ74BT GP which were parked near to each other also caught fire and were badly damaged,” he said.
