Ex-Chipolopolo star Himonde recollects 2012 AFCON victory

Ex-Chipolopolo defender Hichani Himonde says Zambia’s 2012 Africa Cup victory will forever remain memorable for the country.

Yesterday Zambia marked the ninth anniversary of Chipolopolo’s victory recorded in Gabon after edging favourites Ivory Coast on post-match penalties in the final played in Libreville.

Commenting on the ninth anniversary, Himonde, who is now an assistant coach at Ndola United, said 12th February is a significant day for the entire nation.

“Not only in football but in life winners will always be remembered. Winning the Africa Cup is important to us,” said the former TP Mazembe and Mamelodi Sundowns player.

“By then we had not won the Africa Cup. That victory brought positive change in our lives and opened new opportunities,” he said.

Himonde is now calling for more efforts in reviving the dwindling fortunes of the National Soccer Team.

“The 2012 Africa Cup was not won in our day or one year. It took many years of planning. The current crop of players must work and emulate the 2012 Group,” he said.
