Escaping driver hits 2 to death in Solwezi

An escaping driver of Solwezi has bashed a grandmother and her grandchild that she was carrying at the back thereby killing the duo on the spot.

The accident happened yesterday June 10, after Charles Zakeo, 41 of Messengers Township of Solwezi driving his Toyota Corolla registration number BAD 8852 did hit another pedestrian Elizabeth Chibamba 22.

In the process of running away from the scene of accident, Zakeo sped off and hit another pedestrian Grace Mulenga 54, who was carrying her two year old grandchild on her back.

The grandmother and the grand children died on the spot.

The road accident happened 18:30 hours along Independence Avenue at Kyawama Market in Solwezi.

Assistant Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi has confirmed the development to The Independent Observer in an interview.

Mr Chilabi said Zakeo was later arrested and he is in Police custody where he has been charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving contrary to section 161 (1) of the Road Traffic Act No 11 of 2002.

“He will appear in court soon. The bodies of the victims are deposited in Solwezi General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem. Ms Chibamba sustained serious injuries.

“In a related incident, two people died in a road traffic accident which happened yesterday June 10, 2018 around 04:30 hours along Mikango-Palabana road, in Chongwe District. Involved was a motor vehicle Mazda Tribute registration number BAE 7063 driven by Jacob Banda aged 27 of Palabana,” he said.

Mr Chilabi said the accident happened when the driver hit the cyclist identified as Ackson Mumba, 40 and a pillion only identified as Phiri both of Palabana.

He said the duo died on the spot.

“The driver is in Police custody and has been charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving Contrary to section 161 (1) of the Road Traffic Act No 11 of 2002.

He will appear in court soon.  The two bodies are in Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said.
