Efficiency improved at Kasumbalesa border post

Commerce Trade and Industry Minister, Chipoka Mulenga says efficiency at the Kasumbalesa Border Post has improved.

Mr Mulenga said the border is now clearing above 700 from 485 trucks per day.

He said this has resulted in the clearing of the entire backlog that had accumulated on the Kitwe -Kasumbalesa route.

He said Revenue Authorities and all border agencies in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo are working to implement procedures to allow 24-hour border operations at Kasumbalesa, Mokambo, Sakania and Kipushi border posts.

Mr Mulenga said in the interim 06:00 hours to 20:00 hours will be dedicated towards entry and exit of trucks while from 20:00 hours to 06:00 hours will be dedicated to additional document processing.

He said a target of a minimum of 800 trucks on a daily basis to be cleared from Zambia for entry into DRC and Trucks of all nationalities will be allowed to exit into DRC through Kipushi Border.

Mr Mulenga also said Sakania, Mokambo and Kipushi Border Posts will operate fully fledged for all types of commercial traffic from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours

Mr Mulenga was speaking at a media briefting in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Mr Mulenga has flagged off the delivery of Information Communication Technology equipment procured under the Zambia Border Posts Upgrade Project valued at over 179,000 Euros.

The equipment which will include 132 computers,15 laptops and 32 printers will be distributed to Chirundu, Mwami and Nakonde Border posts.

And, Zambia Revenue Authority Commissioner General Dingani Banda thanked government for signing a Sub-Delegation Agreement with -COMESA- to implement the Zambia Border Posts Upgrade Project.

This is under the trade Facilitation Programme which is funded by the European Union through the 11th European Development Fund.

Mr Banda said the support to the Border posts will consequently improve intra-regional trade flows of goods, persons and services.
