DACO puts Kitwe farmers on army worm alert

By NCHIMUNYA MIYOBA
Kitwe District Agricultural Coordinating Officer (DACO) Raphael Muyaule has called on farmers in the district to report any sightings of the notorious army worm infestations that might be emanate to the agricultural office.

Speaking in an interview in Kitwe today Dr Muyaule said farmers should not panic as the district office was closely monitoring the invasion of the reported army worms.

He said the agricultural office had recorded isolated cases of army worms in farming areas known to cultivate winter maize.

“Farmers should start buying chemicals to spray the notorious pests using the e-voucher cards before government steps in as the invasion is not an outbreak.

“We are still seeing some crops been attacked in some fields in the district. We are advising farmers whose crops have been invaded to start using the e-voucher cards even before government steps in. Farmers should take the first step. In terms of magnitude I think Kitwe is still safe,” he said.

He has since advised the farmers to report all cases of army to his office so that they can be advised on what chemicals to use.
