Unknown people have stolen and vandalized Mulonga Water Supply and sanitation company (MWSC) equipment worth K133,000 and interrupted water supply to over 3,000 houses in Nchanga North Township in Chingola.

The vandalism and theft of five valves, a strainer and water meter has resulted in water interruption to more than 3,000 household which are supplied from the circuit.

And MWSC Managing Director Ndila Hamalambo said the stolen equipment’s are on the newly installed transmission lines which are part of the wider construction and rehabilitation works under the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project.

He said this when they inspected the points were the theft took place, he said the vandals are drawing back the progress of the ZWSP.

Mr Hamalambo said that water supply will be affected in houses until the valves are restored after replacements.
He said customers will be informed of the interim measures to cushion the disturbance.

“Members of the public are called upon to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities on MWSC’s new and old installation and further report anyone selling water supply installation to Zambia Police. The Company is concerned over the increased number of thefts and vandalism which is costing the organization a lot of money and is a setback to efforts aimed at improving service levels” he said.

And Chingola Mayor Johnson Kang’ombe who was part of the entourage has sounded a warning that those found wanting will be dealt with accordingly.

Mr Kang’ombe said that his office will not allow criminals thrive in the district as they are destroying properties worth millions of Kwacha.

He said that he was saddened by the loss.
