Council chairperson acts to end street vending

By IREEN MULENGA
Newly elected Serenje Town Council Chairperson Mr Staivous Mulumba has asked all the street vendors illegally operating within the Central Business District (CBD) area to immediately stop and move back into markets instead of trading from the streets.

Mr Mulumba has explained that the Local Authority has provided them with an alternative trading place (Kafina Market) which was recently constructed at a contract sum of one hundred and eighty thousand kwacha, (K180, 000.00) using Constituency Development Funds.

He has further advised street vendors who may not wish to start trading from Kafina Market to consider going back into the older markets because they still have space to accommodate everyone.

Addressing the traders today, Mr Mulumba wondered why the traders where insisting on trading along Ng’answa road despite the Local Authority having constructed a new market for the traders.

The Council Chairperson was franked by Area Councillor Mr Brighton Yamba, Council Secretary Ms Caroline Mpande, and Director of Works Eng. Tenson Mfula among other Council staff
