Chililabombwe Municipal Council through the Department of Public Health is currently conducting the liquor patrol program aimed at controlling the increasing number of illegal liquor premises (shabeens) in the district.

This is pursuant to the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011.

The Local Authority during the period of undertaking the liquor patrol program (from 8th February, 2023 to-date) has seized about 102 cases of various assorted quantities of liquor and closed down 9 Shabeens which were operating without permits.

Subject to the provision of the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2012, “A person who sales or offers for sale any intoxicating liquor without a license or sells any intoxicating liquor except on licensed premises, commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a penalty not exceeding 300,000 penalty units or to imprisonment of not more than 3 years or both.

Therefore, the Council wishes to urge the general public that with a tendency of selling liquor in undesignated premises and houses to desist from such vices and any distributer or manufacturer found wanting will be penalized or prosecuted.

“We further urge the general public to report any illegal sale of liquor within the district to the Public Health or Public Relations office,” part of the statement read.
