Chipata vendors want alternative trading place

By Martin Nkhoma in Chipata
Street vendors who usually trade just behind Chipata City council offices along Kafula road have called on government to allow them to continue trading.

Speaking to The Independent Observer, one of the affected vendors, Peter Nyirenda and Morris Shawa explained that they are currently unable to provide for their families as they have been told to move out of the streets without being given a place to trade from.

The duo said that they are ready to place hand washing basins around their trading spaces to ensure high standards of hygiene are observed.

And James Phiri, another street vendor has accused the local authority of selective application of the law.

Mr Phiri alleged that the street vendors who were trading at Malunga Garage along Umodzi Highway were given an alternative space to continue trading on the streets.

Meanwhile Chipata City Council Public Relations Manager Kameko Manda said street vending is illegal and no one will be allowed to go back on the streets.
