Chingola in new refuse management

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
Chingola Municipal Council has rolled out a garbage collection project in order to mitigate the challenge of garbage in the district.

The project would be in residential areas, schools, lodges, churches, garages and selected trading premises.

Chingola Mayor Titus Tembo said the challenge of garbage can be won when all stake holders are involved including residents.

Mr Tembo said the views and contributions of everyone are important to make Chingola clean again.

He said the Ward Development Committees (WDC) should be fully involved in the program and work together with the civic leaders.

The Mayor said that WDCs have a responsibility to engage the members of the community to widely educate them on the program.

Mr Tembo said the responsibility is quite substantial. It cannot be left to the council alone but everyone should be involved.

He said that it is a moral duty for civic leaders to support projects that benefit the community.

The Mayor commended the department of public health for the initiative.

Mr Tembo said this in a speech read on his behalf by Mibula ward Councillor Kennedy Simpasa during the Waste Management workshop.

And Director Public Health Donald Mwanza said that waste management starts with oneself taking responsibility in their homes.

Mr Mwanza said people should develop a habit of disposing waste in the rightful places like bins dotted around town instead of people throwing it anyhow.

He said it should not take an outbreak of cholera to realize that waste management is important.
