A Police Officer at Chingola Central Police has been arrested for stealing an AK47 assault rifle valued at K105, 995.00 from the police armory.

Copperbelt Police Chief Charity Katanga has confirmed the theft of an AK47 rifle serial No. CT 3362 by Constable Haggai Namauna 28, of Chingola Central Police.

Ms Katanga told The Independent Observer in an interview that the rifle without bullets went missing between March 12, 2019 around 07:00 hrs and November 7, 2019.

She said the Amory Officer In-charge Mabvuto Phiri had reported the missing of an AK47 from the Amory but there was no clue until Namauna was heard wanting to find a buyer for the gun.

Ms Katanga said police officers then went to search his house where they found the AK47 under his mattress with alterations such as the cutting of the buttstock.

She said the accused was arrested, charged with one count of theft by public servant and later released on police bond.

He will appear in court on Thursday November 21, 2019.
