Chiengi MP nabbed, charged for spitting on a journalist

Police in Lusaka have arrested and charged Chiengi Member of Parliament Given Katuta for the offence of Common Assault (spitting on a Journalist) Contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said Ms Katuta was reported by Times of Zambia photo Journalist Henry Chunza 41, that whilst on duty at parliament premises he was commonly assaulted by Given Katuta an independent member of parliament for Chiengi Constituency.

Mr Hamooga said this occurred on July 21, 2023 around 09:00 hours at Parliament building.

He said brief facts of the matter are that the MP was ordered to walk out by the Speaker of the National Assembly after being suspended from the house for one week.

“As she was going out and a journalist was taking photos of her. This irritated her and she started screaming at the journalist, spat in the face of the journalist, manhandled him with the help of other members of parliament and later forced him to delete the pictures,” he said.

Mr Hamoonga said among the members of parliament that the complainant identified is area member of parliament for Chawama Constituency Tasila Lungu.

He said Police instituted investigations into the matter which calumniated in her arrest today.

Mr Hamoonga said the Suspect has been detained in custody waiting to meet the Police bond conditions before being released.
