Chambeshi Bridge closed

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority says that train movements between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Kasama in Zambia will temporarily be disrupted to allow for repairs on the Chambeshi Bridge, which suffered major damages from a goods train accident that occurred on May, 13, 2021.

The Authority’s head of public relations Conrad Simuchile said the section of the track between Chambeshi and Kasama Stations, a stretch of 83km, has been closed to passenger trains.

Mr Simuchile said this is in order to prevent human risk and, instead, the passenger trains will now only run between Kasama and Nakonde until further notice.

He also said that to safeguard the interests of the company’s freight traffic customers under these circumstances, wagons carrying cargo are being propelled across the bridge without locomotives.

Mr Simuchile said this measure that will guarantee uninterrupted deliveries of cargo to and from Kapiri-Mposhi.

He said that nonetheless, they anticipate having normal operations restored within 12 weeks.
