By-Election Looms in Kalabo

A local government by-election is looming in Kalabo District of the Western Province following the resignation of a ward councilor elected on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket in the 2021 general election.

Mr Kaselo Kawewe has resigned as Muchatanga Ward Councilor of Kalabo Central Constituency, in Kalabo District.

Kalabo District Council has confirmed that Mr. Kawewe has resigned after being recruited as a teacher by the Government during the recent teacher hiring programme.

Kalabo District Council Public Relations Officer Benny Munyama said Mr. Kawewe has written to the Council Chairperson over his resignation.

The Council has since notified the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) about the councilor’s decision.

“I can confirm that we are in receipt of the resignation letter from Mr. Kaselo Kawewe, the Muchatanga Ward Councilor, of Kalabo Central Constituency, in Kalabo District, Western Province.According to a letter addressed to the Council Chairperson and copied to the office of the Council Secretary, dated 30th August, 2022, Mr. Kaselo Kawewe stated that he has decided to relinquish his political position, as a UPND Councilor, after being successfully recruited in the civil service, as a teacher,” Mr. Munyama stated.

“We have since written to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to inform them of the Councilor’s decision and for onward action,” he said.
