The immigration Department in Nakonde has secured a two-year sentence for a Burundian Nation for returning to the Zambia unlawfully after being removed by Mpika Immigration Office on 1st July, 2021 via Nakonde Border Control.

Immigration Public Relations Namati Nshinka said Medalo Irakiza 23 was arrested on 7th July, 2021 on a queue at Tazara Station in Nakonde as he attempted to board a train to Kapiri Mposhi without having any travel documents.

Mr Nshinka said it was later established that he had been recently removed from the country by Mpika Immigration Office and that he had returned to Zambia before his required period to remain outside the country expired.

He appeared before the Magistrate Court in Nakonde on 13th July, 2021 and was convicted and sentenced to two years simple imprisonment with no option of a fine.

Meanwhile, the Department between 12th and 14th July 2021 apprehended 106 persons for various immigration offences country-wide. During this period the Department also removed 22 illegal immigrants from the country.

“The Department wishes to encourage members of the general public with information of an individual, business, or employer who may be aiding and abetting illegal immigrants to contact the Department of Immigration,” he said.
