Building of houses along the streams source of concern -DMMU

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) on the Copperbelt say the rise in tendency of residents building houses along the streams and lands prone to floods is worrying.

Speaking in an interview with the Independent Observer, Copperbelt Regional DMMU Coordinator George Akalemwa said the Unit has been sensitizing people on the dangers of building along the streams a situation that has not been taken seriously.

“We have been warning   people on the dangerous of building along the streams or where water passes for but it has not taken seriously and this has resulted in many floods on the Copperbelt,” he said.

Mr Akalemwa said that the local authorities needs to be conscious when allocating land and plots because they are the ones in charge.

He has since appealed to the local authority to work hand in hand with DMMU so that disasters and floods can be reduced on the Copperbelt and the country at large.
