The Botswana Football Association (BFA) have sacked national team head coach David Bright after a disappointing 2019 AFCON qualifiers campaign.
Bright took over the national team for his fourth stint in July 2017, succeeding Englishman Peter Butler, however, things didn’t go according to plan for the 62-year-old.
The Zebras picked up only one point from five games in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, with their group consisting of Mauritania, Angola, and Burkina Faso.
Under Bright’s charge, Botswana were also knocked out of the quarter-finals of the regional 2018 Cosafa Cup, losing to Zimbabwe 3-1 on penalties after drawing 1-1.
“We have done a thorough assessment of the team’s performance. The introspection hinged on so many aspects,” BFA chief executive officer Mfolo Mfolo said.
“The coach had a target of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals, it was one of the deliverables.
“He was also expected to raise the profile of the team, by improving our [Fifa] rankings by 15 places. The opportunity was there to qualify [for the Nations Cup].
“We are now ranked 145, so it was only right that we part amicably with the coach,” Mfolo added.
