Mkushi Town Council’s fire and rescue team yesterday retrieved the body of a 12 year-old girl who drowned in Mushibemba River.

The victim identified as Salome Musonda drowned on Monday, September 18, 2023 at around 14:30 hours when she went swimming with her friends in Mushibemba River, Farm Block area.

MTC Public Relations Officer Mwenya Mulenga said the rescue team conducted a search on the actual day, but all efforts that were made in trying to retrieve the body proved futile.

Ms Mulenga said the rescue team led by Sub-Officer Sunny Malata managed to retrieve the body yesterday after being informed of a body that was seen floating on the river.

She said the body was later taken to Mkush District Hospital.

Ms Mulenga said this is a second case of drowning being attended to by the rescue team in a space of one week.

“Last week Friday, September 15th, 2023, a 32 year-old man, who was identified as Mr. Cacious Mambwe, drowned in Muloba Dam, Nkumbi Ward, when he went fishing.

She said the Local Authority is sending an appeal to members of the public to exercise caution as they undertake their different activities on rivers and streams in the district.

Ms Mulenga has also urged Parents to lookout for their children as we approach the hot season when many children are fond of sneaking out to go swimming, to avoid drowning cases.
