Batoka Innovation, a Zambian-owned company, has officially handed over a water project to the residents of Nsongwe Village, located near the Batoka Gorge in Kazungula District, Southern Province.
The project aims to alleviate the community’s challenges in accessing water for drinking and their animals.
The K1.2 million water project, which will benefit over 2,000 people, was commissioned on Thursday, 23 May 2024, by Chief Mukuni of the Leya people.
The project features a 20,000-liter tank capacity, is solar-powered, and includes two water troughs that can cater to 120 cattle at a time.
During the handover ceremony, Chief Mukuni expressed his happiness with the project, emphasizing his passion for development in his chiefdom.
He praised Batoka Innovation and other investors for bringing such projects to the area.
Kazungula District Council Deputy Chairperson, Oswald Siansundi, acknowledged the government’s prioritization of water provision this year due to the drought.
He commended private companies like Batoka Innovation for complementing the government’s efforts, reducing pressure on the government.
Batoka Innovation Chairman, Michael Tarney, emphasized the company’s commitment to improving access to safe and clean drinking water, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6. He highlighted the importance of corporate investment in communities, uplifting people’s lives.
The residents of Nsongwe Village are thrilled with the project, citing its timely arrival amidst the severe drought. They expressed gratitude for the project, which will save their animals from dying and improve their overall lives. The solar equipment is designed to last 20 years, ensuring a sustainable supply of clean drinking water.
