Any attempts to prevent mining lower Zambezi will not be tolerated-Tembo

By MAIMBO MWEEMBA
Feira Constituency Member of Parliament Emmanuel Tembo says people of Luangwa District will not tolerate any attempts to prevent mining in the mineral rich area.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Mr Tembo said Luangwa needs a mine like yesterday because tourism has not benefitted the locals for years.

Mr Tembo said that those opposed to the mine are suffering from colonial hangover and need to realise that establishing a mine in the region will have great economic benefit to communities and government at large.

He said that there is only widespread illegal mining is active in the area as well as illegal poaching which has only benefitted outsiders.

Mr Tembo wondered why they are calls to prevent legally established means of safe mining.

His remarks come amid heightened debate on the looming mining in the Lower Zambezi National Park that is been fiercely defended by environmentalists.
