Another miner killed at KCM in Chililabombwe

Another miner at Chililabombwe underground mine for Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has been crushed to death.

Fredrick Musonda, a Rig operator was run over by a loader leaving him with multiple injuries.

KCM Manager Public Relations and Communications Shapi Shachinda has confirmed the fatal mine accident to The Independent Observer.

Mr Shachinda said it was with great sadness that the mining firm was confirming the mine fatal accident at Konkola Mine Shaft No. 4 which happened on Wednesday August 8, 2018, claimed the life of a KCM contracted employee.

“No one else was injured in the incident that occurred in Chililabombwe. The victim’s next-of-kin have been informed, and his details are being withheld to protect the privacy of his family.

“All of us at KCM and Vedanta are devastated by the sad news, and commit to assisting the family of the deceased during and after this difficult period. All work at the particular section of Konkola Underground Mine Shaft 4 has been halted while investigations are underway,” he said.

Other sources told The Independent Observer that Mr Musonda sustained injuries to the head and chest.

The accident happened at 950 metre level deep last evening.

This is an area that is being operated by Chinese firm.

KCM has had three fatalities within the space of five months, all of which are happening at the areas operated by KCM contracted workforce.

Two were blasted to death.
