Zambia’s GBV sour-Police

Zambia has recorded souring Gender Based Violence GBV) statistics standing at an amazing figure of 6, 114.

The 6,114 cases of GBV countrywide were recorded during the third quarter of 2018.

This is a staggering increase by 1, 018 from the 5,096 cases recorded during the same period in 2017, showing an increase of 16.7 per cent.

Broken down statistics show a total of 664 cases of child defilement were recorded cases out of which three cases were against boys while 661 were against girls.

Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of child defilement cases with 320 of the child defilement cases reported countrywide.

A total of 124 rape cases were reported and 23 cases were attempted rape, while on other sexual offences, the country recorded 37 cases of indecent assault out of which two were against male adults, and 12 cases were of Incest.

There has also been an increase in GBV related murder cases were in the third quarter of 2018 recorded more cases than the same period in 2017 with 24 murder cases and 17 murder cases respectively.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo attributed the spike to various interventions put in place by the Police Victim Support Unit and other stake holders in sensitizing and combating the vice.

Ms Katongo said during the same period, two cases of Human Trafficking were recorded in Luapula Province involving two women.
