Mulonga Water and Sanitation Company (MWSC) says it is committed to providing clean, safe, and reliable water for its communities despite the growing challenges posed by increasing population, aging infrastructure, and climate change.
MWSC Managing Director Ndila Hamalambo said that the path ahead is challenging, but with collaboration and commitment, the company can overcome these obstacles and create a more sustainable future.
Mr Hamalambo said this during World Water Day celebrations in Chabanyama, he highlighted the significant challenges in Chingola and beyond, including aging infrastructure, water leaks, frequent sewer blockages, vandalism, theft, and encroachment on vital service lines.
He said Social behavior is a major contributor to these challenges, including improper use of sanitation facilities, vandalism, and illegal construction on water and sanitation pipes.
Mr Hamalambo said MWSC is addressing recurring sewer blockages caused by indiscriminate dumping of solid waste in sewer manholes and the diversion of stormwater into the sewer system.
He said the company is also tackling ongoing sewerage issues in Twatasha Site and Service, exacerbated by a recent project.
“On the water supply side, MWSC is addressing challenges faced by residents in Chabanyama, Twatasha, and Lulamba. Repairs to the damaged main water supply pipe are ongoing in Chabanyama, while water supply has been successfully restored in Maiteneke,” he said.
Mr Hamalambo expressed gratitude for the government’s significant support, including a K5.7 million release to rehabilitate part of the water and sanitation infrastructure in Chiwempala.

This project will improve water production, treatment, and distribution, reducing water stress in Chiwempala Township.
And Chingola Mayor Johnson Kangombe, emphasized the critical importance of protecting the water sources amidst climate change and pollution.
The mayor acknowledged that climate change, pollution, and poor management practices had disrupted rainfall patterns, dried up rivers, and contaminated waterways.
He said despite these challenges, his commitment to leading initiatives that safeguard the town’s water sources, improve water access, and enhance sanitation.
Through partnerships with local stakeholders, the town had made significant strides in strengthening its water infrastructure, including the construction of community ablution facilities.
