A 13-year-old girl, Bukata Kunda is recovering at Kitwe Teaching Hospital after being shot by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police officers pursuing a suspect in Mufulira’s Kantanshi Township.
The incident occurred on February 23, 2025, around 09:00hrs, when officers from the anti-robbery squad were led by three suspects to recover stolen goods.
As the police vehicle approached, one of the suspects jumped out and fled, prompting officers to fire warning shots.
In an attempt to immobilize the suspect, police aimed at his legs, but unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Bukata Kunda in the left thigh while she was securing the gate at her home.
This is contained in a statement by Copperbelt Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba.
Mr Mweemba said the victim’s father, Clifford Kunda, reported the incident, and medical attention was promptly provided.
Bukata was initially taken to Ronald Ross General Hospital and later referred to Kitwe Teaching Hospital, where her condition is currently stable.
Kantanshi police station is investigating the incident.
