Court Hears Guards Were Drunk on Night of Emmanuel Banda’s Escape

By Staff Writer
A nurse at Chipata Central Hospital, Carol Daka, has testified that some officers guarding former Petauke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Banda appeared drunk on the night he escaped.

Daka stated that one officer was unable to walk due to intoxication and that she had to ask them to quiet down.

According to Daka, when Banda escaped, she heard a loud bang in his ward and found the officers unsure of what had happened.

One officer claimed Banda had requested five minutes of privacy for a medical procedure.

The court visited the hospital as part of the investigation.

Daka will face cross-examination by the defense today.

Another witness, Assistant Superintendent Richard Magwambe, reported that the security situation at the hospital was normal hours before Banda’s escape.

However, Magwambe admitted that he did not individually interview the officers after the incident.
