Mpox Cases Rise, Zambia Confirms 15 Cases, 8 in Lusaka

Zambia has confirmed 15 cases of Mpox, with the latest 8 cases reported in Lusaka.

The Ministry of Health is actively tracing contacts and strengthening surveillance to prevent further spread of the disease.

According to Joshua Siame, Senior Health Promotions Officer in the Ministry of Health, the cases are concentrated in the areas of Kanyama, Bauleni, Garden, and Upper Lusaka.

The Ministry of Health is promoting public awareness, emphasizing the importance of recognizing symptoms and taking precautions.

Mpox can lead to severe health issues, including pneumonia, brain infections, and even blindness if left untreated. However, the disease is preventable with timely intervention.

To reduce the spread of the virus, the Ministry of Health recommends frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers. Mpox can be transmitted through contact with surfaces or by shaking hands.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in August 2024, due to its rapid spread in Africa
