Tragedy struck in Mazi-atuwa ward, Chipangali District, Eastern Province, as one person was killed by an elephant that strayed from Kasungu National Park in Malawi.
Another individual from Chief Mafuta’s area is currently receiving treatment at Chipata Central Hospital for injuries sustained in a separate elephant attack yesterday.
Chipangali Council Chairperson Maxson Nkhoma confirmed that today’s incident occurred in Kadiula area of Chief Chinunda’s jurisdiction.
Authorities from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife promptly responded to the area after being alerted about the presence of wild animals.
According to Reverend Jonathan Banda, a relative of the deceased, the victim was attempting to flee his premises when an elephant, accompanied by its calf, targeted and trampled him.
This incident highlights the growing concern of human-animal conflict in Zambia. Chief Chanje of Chipangali District has urged the government to find a lasting solution to this issue.
