President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned an ultra-modern Flour Milling Plant and launched the Winter Maize harvesting at Zambeef’s Chambatata farms in Mpongwe district.
Addressing farmers, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of value addition and partnerships in achieving food security and economic growth.
“Value addition is the way to go,” he said. “It will help us create jobs and produce raw materials for stock feed production”.
The President encouraged farmers to work together, share best practices, and learn from each other to achieve the target of producing 10 million tonnes of maize per year.
Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo announced that the ministry has delivered fertilizer for the 2024/2025 farming season, available for collection in respective districts.
He also challenged Zambeef to increase its maize and soya bean production to 10% of national output, matching its current wheat production levels.
Zambeef CEO Faith Mukutu hailed the new milling plant as a vital step towards securing Zambia’s food future.
“The mill’s technology doubles our processing capacity to 50,000 tonnes per year, ensuring an abundant supply of high-quality flour”. Zambeef aims to meet domestic wheat needs and explore export opportunities.
This development is part of President Hichilema’s broader vision to transform Zambia’s agricultural sector, having previously launched the early maize harvesting program and emphasized the need for sustainable agricultural practices and irrigation-based agriculture.
