A mental health activist, Francis Chipalo is urging the Zambian government to prioritize mental health issues in the country.
Zambia, like many nations, faces economic challenges and unemployment, disproportionately affecting young people. Despite some government initiatives, millions remain unemployed and in poverty, leading to mental health concerns.
Mr Chipalo emphasizes that economic hardship drives many youths to substance abuse and alcoholism, with some tragically resorting to suicide.
He calls for increased awareness campaigns and investment in mental health centers, from community levels to specialized infrastructure.
Mr Chipalo and global health organizations advocate for improved mental health awareness through campaigns and education, investment in mental health infrastructure, and collaborative action among governments, employers, and stakeholders to prioritize mental health.
This year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Workplace Mental Health,” highlights the vital connection between mental well-being and work.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stresses that safe working environments can protect mental health, while unhealthy conditions can pose significant risks.
